The need for childcare services
is widespread as the trend of dual career couples
become more common in the 1990's. Based on the
1990 Population Census, more women are remaining
in the labour force in spite of marriages and
childbirth. Hence alternative childcare arrangements
outside family is an option to be explored.
The
National Council of Social Service (NCSS) study
on BASC in April 1993 highlighted that while there
is prevalence of latchkey children amongst the
Malay families the utilisation of BASC by Malay
Muslim families is low.
For
the benefit of the Malay Muslim disadvantaged
families, the BASC service at the new centre has
been packaged to cater to their specific needs.
This means the provision of "halal"
food, activities that are based on a curriculum
that is congruent to their values and belief system.
In addition to physical care, the BASC programme
incorporate the socialisation of positive values
and training in social skills. For the low income
families the service is affordable. Where needed
and possible, fee and transport subsidies will
be offered.
Support
for parents in child management process through
regular meetings and workshops need to be provided
to help parents in their parenting tasks.
PPIS
provide such a service for the disadvantaged in
the Malay Muslim
community.
